FEATURE:  Live Events Made Easy

By Pam Thomas, CornerWays, LLC

You’ve probably seen the phrase “live event” before on the web and wondered what makes it different to ordinary online chatting. Live events are chats run at the sharp end and in deeper water, where control over the chat and smooth management is absolutely crucial to your guests, your audience and your site.  A glitchy chat tool, unmanageable features, or plainly difficult interfaces can ruin a live event in an instant and ruin a reputation just as quickly.  ChatSpace makes life so much easier for such critical events.

In basic terms a live event commonly includes the exchange between a guest speaker, moderators and an audience.  For a live event we highly recommend using ChatSpace’s auditorium and live event add-on rather than a regular chat room. The latter does not allow events to be easily controlled and managed, it can easily become chaotic leading to frustration and confusion for participants, and, what is more, it does not necessarily protect your live event speakers from inappropriate chat or questions from difficult or simply boisterous audience members.

Live events should enable members to ask questions of the speaker in an organized fashion.  ChatSpace’s hushed room feature provides the speaker with the opportunity to engage with participants within a controlled environment.  Only they and the moderation team are able to talk directly to the room.  Audience members are not able to speak directly into the room, rather they submit questions to the screener/moderator for approval. This helps with the flow of the exchange, helps to control the quality of the event and allows the live event staff to filter out any extraneous or otherwise unsuitable communication.

ChatSpace’s Tour capability also allows the moderator to push slides or informational web pages to the audience to further enhance the interactive nature of the event. This is a great feature to use when wanting to show examples or a presentation in a live event setting.  The tour feature can be used in conjunction with your guest speaker to showcase their work, to provide supporting examples whilst they are talking to the room, to promote them or to tell the audience more about their guest.  The possibilities are tremendous.  What is more, the slides or toured pages will appear seamlessly within the ChatSpace window – no pop-ups, no distractions, no break in the flow of the live event.

The Moderation Tool with its question screening facility is a breeze for live event staff to choose questions to submit to the screen in an organized fashion. This provides the guest speaker the chance to respond to the question, before the next question is sent to the screen. Staff are able to delete any questions that may cause discomfort to the guest speaker(s), other participants and live event sponsor, or to delete questions that may be inappropriate due to language or content.

Whether you have a moderation staff of one person, a moderator/MC and a question screener, or many more live events personnel, ChatSpace’s Live Events Tool works intuitively, providing you with the most successful event possible.
